Windsurfing Sails

This time I will write a bit more general about windsurf sails, because more and more people ask me some explanations about it.

The sail used by a windsurfer is one of their most important pieces of equipment, and one which can have a huge impact on their performance whilst out on the sea. The sail is actually the “engine” of the windsurfer. With this in mind, here is a brief overview of some of the most common styles of sail.

There are two main types of sail in popular use: the camber induced sail and the sail without cambers. Cambered sails feature plastic devices, which cup against the mast, and help to give the sail a more rigid shape. This can be extremely useful in terms of speeds and stability, although it can be more difficult to maneuver the sail itself. Even so, this is still the preferred type of sail for those who take part in windsurfing races. One good example of such a sail is the Aero+ model of the Challenger sails.

Sails without cambers or rotational sails, on the other hand, are supported by battens which, unlike with the cambered sail, go beyond the length of the mast. This means that they must be rotated when engaging in moves such as tacking or jibing. This type of sail has the advantage of being much easier to maneuver, although they offer less power and stability when sailing in a straight direction.

Sails can also be adapted for those who are new to windsurfing, in order to make it easier for beginners to learn the skills and techniques that they will need. In the same way as a child might learn to ride a bicycle by using stabilizers, or a new player at PartyPoker Slovenian might choose to play low limit games until they improve, a beginner windsurfer usually learns without battens in their sails, as it makes sailing much easier to use in light winds. However, as their technique improves and a windsurfer wants to use stronger winds to their advantage, a battened rotational or after some time cambered sail will be required for greater stability and better speed.

In addition, different types of windsurfing can require slightly modified sails. For example, depending on whether the sail is being used for racing, wave, or freeride windsurfing will have an impact upon the type of sail which is used, in order to a windsurfer to reach their potential.
